MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WSBT) — An Indiana man is dead and his 3-year-old son is expected to survive after police say the man jumped from a bridge over the state toll road early Wednesday.
Police say that witnesses found a vehicle on the Main Street bridge in Mishawaka and later saw a man holding child.
The 45-year-old man then jumped off the bridge.
One of the witnesses tried to stop the man from jumping from the bridge to the toll road underneath, but was unable to because of the loose clothing he was wearing.
The witnesses were able to reach both father and child on the toll road and drag them off to the side of the road. The father died from his injuries.
According to police, the child was not seriously injured and should be released from the hospital within a day or so.
The mother of the 3-year-old is with her child at the hospital.
