Cambria County, PA — A family is heartbroken and a judge is furious following the preliminary hearing for Michael Lyles Jr. He is accused of shooting and killing 38-year-old Candace Mervin in a Hornerstown home.
The preliminary hearing for Lyles took place at the Cambria county central park complex. He is charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and child endangerment.
The defendant was heard by judge Kevin Price, in Johnstown. The hearing was first delayed a half hour because the defense attorney did not show up. Judge Price continued the hearing yet again. He says he is furious that this happened and says it is a burden to the people attending, especially the victim’s family.
Lyles could be seen slouching in his chair, smiling. His family wished him luck, and told him to “stay strong” as he was escorted out of the courtroom.
Family members of the victim were visibly upset. One saying:
...He just sat there, smiling, like he didn't care.Cambria county district attorney, Greg Neugebauer, shares the commonwealth’s perspective, in this case. “The commonwealth looks forward to prosecuting this case to its completion, in that point in time.” Neugebauer says.
Lyles preliminary hearing is now scheduled for Friday, September 22nd.
