In our Inkay Not Evolving Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Indigo Disk guide, we are going to explain why the squid Pokemon is refusing to evolve properly in the new DLC. We are also going to walk you through the whole evolution process, since it’s way more obtuse than most others. Let’s get right into it.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Inkay Not Evolving into Malamar Explained
Before we explain why Inkay is not evolving into Malamar properly in the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Indigo Disk DLC, we have to explain how the evolution is supposed to go. Inkay evolves when the Pokemon hits level 30 or above. In the 3DS days of old, you had to turn the unit upside down when Inkay levels up, and that’s actually what you have to do here, too. So, when your squid Pokemon hits 30 or any level above, turn the Switch upside down just before it levels up. This means that you’ll have to take the console out of the dock. Also, it seems that using XP items does not work; Inkay has to level up in battle. I’m not 100% sure about that, though.

If you have any Pro Controllers paired, even if you’re not using them at the moment, the game will not register you turning the console around. So, head into Settings in the main Switch menu, go into Controllers, and unpair any and all Pro Controllers. Try the evolution again as described in the previous paragraph, and it should finally work. I don’t know why this is happening the way it is, but a number of players have reported that unpairing the Pro Controller is the fix. If you know of any other workarounds, let us know in the comments.
