WASHINGTON (TND) — The IRS whistleblower who came forward with concerns about how the Justice Department handled Hunter Biden’s case broke his silence Tuesday.
IRS agent Gary Shapley spoke first in an exclusive interview with CBS News. Shapley stood firm his stance the president’s son got special treatment during the federal investigation into his tax and gun crimes.
"If this was any other person they likely would have already served their sentence," said Shapley.
Shapley initially brought his concerns to Congress and testified before the House Ways and Means Committee in May. Republicans on the committee made the testimony public Thursday.
Shapley alleges the Justice Department roadblocked parts of their investigation saying, "There were certain investigative steps we weren’t allowed to take that could have led us to President Biden. As part of his congressional testimony, Shapley shared a WhatsApp message from 2017 were Hunter Biden made demands from a Chinese associate, mentioning multiple times his dad was there next to him.
This associate, Henry Zhao, is a member of the Chinese Communist Party according to reporting by the New York Post.
Reporters continue to pressure the president on his involvement.
On Wednesday Biden was asked, “Were you sitting there? Were you involved?" Biden answered with a strong, "No!The House Oversight Committee released another one of Hunter Biden’s WhatsApp exchanges from 2017. In this message he demanded $5 million per year from an official at a CCP-linked Chinese Energy Company. The first son wrote “The Biden’s are the best I know at doing exactly what the Chairman wants from this partnershipn.”
The Committee identified the "Chairman" as a Chinese billionaire whose stated goal is expanding China’s reach and influence around the world.
Some Republicans point to the IRS whistleblower testimony as further proof the DOJ protects the Bidens.
“This is public corruption," said Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla. "Joe Biden knows about it he’s been lying to the American people for years.”
The U.S. Attorney's office for the District of Delaware has not commented on the Hunter Biden case since the plea deal was announced. GOP leaders in congress say they have called U.S. Attorney David Weiss, the lead prosecutor in the case, to testify and answer questions raised by the whistleblower.
When asked for comment, Justice Department referred The National Desk to Attorney General Merrick Garland’s comments last Friday: “We make our cases based on the facts and the law. These are not just words. These are the foundations of what we live by.Garland will appear before the House on September 20th. He’ll likely face tough questions from Republicans threating impeachment.
