JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — A local hockey team made up of veterans held their first game of the year Saturday morning.
The Johnstown Generals played against the Philadelphia Warriors at the Cambria County War Memorial.
Steve Carlson, one of the famed Hanson Brothers, was there to speak to fans and players.
John Kovac, President of the Johnstown Generals, says these games help to keep the mental health of these veterans in check.
"To be able to get together as a group of veterans, make sure that we're doing buddy checks, and that no one is getting too overly depressed. Just being able to be there for each other," said Kovac.
The Johnstown Generals are also having a game January 30th for veteran suicide awareness.
They'll be blocking off section 22 of the arena to represent the 22 veterans who take their lives every day, Kovac told 6 News.
