Viral Meme Set to Linkin Park Song Reimagines Movie Endings

September 2024 · 2 minute read

With the release of their third studio album Minutes to Midnight, 2007 was a big year for rock band Linkin Park. The album spawned the group's smash single "What I've Done," which was prominently featured in the promotions for Michael Bay's blockbuster Transformers film the same year.

Now, 15 years later, the song is at the top of the pop culture zeitgeist once again thanks to a new meme.

On Twitter, fans are imagining what it would sound like if their favorite movies came out in 2007 — with their famous endings set to "What I've Done." Everything from Star Wars to The Godfather and Spider-Man have been re-imagined thanks to the viral trend.

Peep some of the funniest dubs of the song below:

The trend has become so prevalent online that even Linkin Park co-founder Mike Shinoda weighed in, revealing he's a fan of the trend.

"It feels like 2007," he tweeted Wednesday (Aug. 24), sharing some of his favorite memes from the viral trend in a Twitter thread.

The song is perhaps best remembered for its use in the Transformers franchise, particularly as the closing song in the first film.

"Linkin Park have always been huge Transformers fans," Bay told The Hollywood Reporter in 2011.

"They do very ‘movie-esque’ kind of music. We’ve had a good run — their tracks for the first two movies became number one hits, and their song for this movie fit in perfectly," he continued.

"What I've Done" reached No. 7 on the coveted Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also ranked No. 38 on the biggest hits of 2007. It's since been certified 6x Platinum in the U.S., selling 6,000,000 total units.
