LATROBE - The pilot of a small plane that crashed at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport has been flown to a Pittsburgh hospital.

The executive director of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority says Doug Splitstone was taken to the hospital as a precaution. He was the only one aboard the Piper Warrior when it crashed about 10:30 a.m. Friday.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the plane was doing practice maneuvers when it flipped over into a grassy infield.

FAA registration records show the plane is owned by Westmoreland Aviation Holding Co. Inc. in Murrysville. It owns and maintains airplanes used to teach people to fly.

The airport is in Unity Township along U.S. Route 30.

A commercial Spirit Airlines flight was diverted to Cleveland as a result.
