BIOGRAPHY
Of British origin, Russell Tovey was destined for a career as a history teacher, until the films: The Circle of Missing Poets , The Goonies and Stand By Me , finally encouraged him to become an actor. Starting at the age of 11 in the children’s series Mud , the young boy was particularly encouraged by his mother to continue on this path. Stopping his studies at 16, and unsure of himself because he had never attended drama school, he signed up for numerous workshops and readings offered by the Royal National Theater . Thus, he was hired in 2004 for the role of Rudge in Alan Bennett ‘s play , ” The History Boys (Wild Generation) “, and also participated in performances on Broadway, Sydney, Wellington and Hong Kong. This success therefore allowed him to make himself known, and to fully launch into his acting career.
It was in 2008, announcing that he wanted to play darker and tortured characters, that he obtained his first leading role in Being Human . This series depicts, in a humorous tone, the coexistence of fantastic creatures. Russell Tovey plays George Sands, a werewolf trying to tame his nature and his painful transformations.
As if echoing his homosexuality, Russell Tovey tries to control the image he projects. Unlike the “flamboyant” representations of gay characters with whom he was unable to identify during his adolescence, the young man wishes to offer through his roles, a vision that corresponds more to him. This is the case in films like Pride (2014), chronicling the support given by a group of gay and lesbian activists to the miners’ strike in Great Britain in the 1980s; the HBO series, Looking (2013-2015), about the daily lives of gay friends living in San Francisco; or, The Pass (2016) raising the question of homosexuality in the world of football.
However, not wishing to be confined to one type of role, Russell Tovey tries out different registers and lends his voice in a few animated films for children, notably The Pirates! Good for Nothing, Bad at Everything (2012) and Moomins on the Riviera (2014); and also includes comedy series such as Him & Her (2010-2013), and The Job Lot (2013 – ).
Also an author, playwright and screenwriter, Tovey has written several plays, a short film ( Victor , 2010) and one of his short stories was published in the American women’s magazine, Company .
On three occasions, Russell Tovey joined the cast of series known to the general public: for an episode in Sherlock (” The Hounds of Baskerville “) and The Night Manager , a mini-series hosted by Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie . His name was even suggested to replace David Tennant in the famous Doctor Who role , before Matt Smith was announced as the official successor. Ultimately, Russell Tovey plays Alonso Frame, in the Christmas special episode, ” A Cruise Around the Earth “.
In 2016, he joined the headliners of Quantico , for the second season, in the lead role of Harry Doyle, a man on his way to becoming one of the CIA’s top agents. Described as mysterious and ready to do anything to achieve his ends, this character was created specifically for him.
