JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Now that the plans to pursue windmills on Laurel Ridge have been scrapped, eliminating the chance to generate about $250,000 annually, the Greater Johnstown Water Authority is looking for others to generate money.

Competitive Power Ventures said Thursday that it will not pursue the controversial project.

That was good news for residents who didn't want to see their tree-lined views ruined and property values impacted on the 6,000-acre property.

However, it leaves the water authority left with finding the funds to help pay for nearly $25 million of dam improvement projects.

On Thursday, the authority OK'd a nearly $10-a-month surcharge on vacant properties.

The resolution takes effect next billing cycle.

It only impacts vacant homes whose water system is operational.

If not, you'll need to prove that to the water authority to have the surcharge waived.
